Chard - Dairy Crest
Appointment of Jelly Associates by Dairy Crest limitedJelly Associates were appointed as professional quantity surveyors to manage all financial and contractual aspects of a £9.20 million extension and refurbishment of their existing factory in Chard, Somerset.
The project was constructed to produce over 40 different varieties of cream and cream based products for the food division of Marks & Spencer. The new construction comprised a two storey extension with large cream storage tanks on the first floor. The structure was part founded on a line of disused milk silo bases next to a major railway line causing a significant design challenge for the structural engineer and costing challenge for Jelly Associates. The works within the existing building included a major refurbishment of an old butter processing area to form a new cream processing and packing department. The project involved installations within a working factory maintaining the highest level of hygiene required when working within a creamery. The installations required new services involving air temperature, humidity and air quality control of the highest degree as well as chilled water, process water, softened water, hot water, compressed air, gas, power and fire alarm installations.
Jelly Associates obtained competitive quotations for the construction project, dealt with all contractual documentation and the appointment of a principal contractor. They were also appointed as project managers to manage the process installations contract, working closely with the Dairy Crest ‘in house’ appointed project engineer and liaising with the client’s lawyers to set up and manage the contracts for the process installations contractor which formed the major element of the project.
The development was opened in 2005.
